It teaches me that mental health issues shouldn’t be drawn a veil over. It shows how suicidal people don’t always have to fit the stereotypical gloomy look. Paper Towns helped me in understanding the current suicide issue. In my SPM, I wrote the part where they stumble upon the body of a man who has committed suicide. In my SPM trial, I wrote about when they went on a road trip to find Margo. It was to the extent that I could remember all the plots perfectly and rewrote them for my English examination. It was the first John Green writing that I read which got me hooked. Paper Towns is a book that is close to my heart. Especially in these difficult times, people should know that mental issues shouldn’t be concealed to make everyone feel better. Sweeping her concerns under the rug is not a good look. The film should weave Margo’s concern along with the coming-of-age story the way the novel did. It is understood that the tonal change was to avoid Margo’s concern clouding the feel-good coming-of-age story that viewers viewed onscreen. Today, it is clear as day that the filmmaker should have discussed the topic. Not diving deeper into the possibility was a missed opportunity by the filmmaker to discuss an important issue. In the adaptation, everyone assumes she would be safe even if she doesn’t return home. They fear if they were too late, she might have pulled the trigger already. In the novel, there is more at stake as Margo’s friends worry about her wellbeing. This is a crucial detail because it changes the tone completely. It was a lame string, for sure, but it was the one I had left, and every paper girl needs at least one string, right?”

One of the most significant absent detail was Margo’s friends never thought she could have committed suicide. The film omitted vital bits of the book to fit the conventional two hours plus movie length.

As like every other film adaptation, it lacks the essence brought by the novel. Seven years after the book’s publication, it finally made it to the big screen via a film adaptation. With the emergence of clues believed by Quentin to be left by Margo to aid him in finding her, he now leaves his comfort zone to find her. However, that isn’t possible with Margo disappearing. Quentin’s mind races with thoughts of Margo and the possible future after their night of chaos. One night, Margo jumps through Quentin’s bedroom window out of the blue to drag him along on a night filled with revenge and mischievous pranks. However, they drifted apart when they were teenagers. They used to hang around and go on these adventures on their bikes. They were next-door neighbours since childhood. Let’s talk about Paper Towns, shall we? The young adult novel written by John Green is about the coming-of-age of the protagonist, Quentin Jacobsen, and his search for Margo Roth Spiegelman.
